How to plan family photos with young kids
Planning a family photo session can be exciting, but if you have young kids, timing is everything ( I know… I am a mom too!) Scheduling the shoot around your child’s nap time can make all the difference in ensuring happy, relaxed faces for the entire family. Here’s how to plan an stress-free and successful session while keeping nap time in mind.
1. Pick the Right Time of Day; Kids (especially babies and toddlers) are typically happiest after they've had their rest. Schedule your photo session either right after your child's nap or just before they need to go down for one. This will help ensure they are well-rested and in a good mood. The late morning or early afternoon tends to work best for most families, as it aligns with the typical nap schedule.
2. Know Meltdowns are OK! Kids’ moods can change quickly, please do not ever feel bad about your kid being a kid. I always try to give walking breaks, or playing breaks during family photo sessions. If your child starts getting tired or upset, it’s better to go with the flow and let them do their thing rather then forcing them to smile. Trust me, you can get a lot done in a 15 minute session!
3. Bring Comfort Items & Snacks If your child is particularly attached to a blanket, toy, or stuffed animal, be sure to bring it along for the session. These familiar items can help your child feel more at ease during the photoshoot, making it easier to capture those perfect moments. My daughter will almost do anything for a scoop of peanut butter, so we usually bring that!
4. Choose a Relaxing Location Finally, choose a location that’s easy to get to and won’t cause your little one additional stress. A park, your home, or a quiet beach could be the perfect settings to keep everyone comfortable and happy. Familiar environments can also help your child feel more at ease and enjoy the experience.
By planning your family photo session around your child’s nap time, you’ll ensure that everyone is in a great mood, leading to more relaxed, genuine, and beautiful photos.
